David A. Highmark
FineMark National Bank & Trust, Arizona
and HSM, FineMark's Athletes Division
David A. Highmark is President of FineMark National Bank & Trust, Arizona. He also founded and runs Highmark Sports Management (HSM), a division of FineMark National Bank & Trust. Before creating HSM in 2011, Highmark spent 26 years with Northern Trust Bank. He started in 1985 as Vice President and Director of Commercial Banking in the company's Miami office and later served as President of the Naples, Fort Myers and Bonita Springs, offices before moving to Arizona. While working in Arizona, he established a Professional Athletes Division, which became one of the nation’s largest providers of financial services to professional athletes.
In 1973, Highmark, a Dartmouth College graduate, was drafted and signed by the Baltimore Orioles. A torn rotator cuff ended his career just one year later. This experience contributed to David’s conservative approach when it comes to managing the financial lives of professional athletes. When Highmark’s baseball career ended, he returned to school, earning his MBA from Indiana University. He joined Eli Lilly as a financial analyst after graduation. Before entering the banking industry, David worked in the athletic department at the University of Miami (1977-1980) as an associate director of finances.
After moving to Arizona to serve as CEO, Highmark was surprised to hear the dropout rate in that state ranks among the highest in the nation. In 2000, he founded Arizona Quest for Kids, a program he learned about while living in Florida.
