Smart Spending Is a Skill—And It Starts at Home

As parents, we spend a lot of time teaching kids how to save—but teaching them how to spend is just as important.

Spending decisions are full of valuable lessons. When kids have the chance to manage their own money, they learn about choices, consequences, and priorities. And it’s better to make mistakes with $10 now than with $10,000 later.

How to Build Smart Spending Habits:

• Let them make their own decisions. Resist the urge to control every purchase. Instead, offer support and ask questions.
• Encourage a short spending journal. Have your child track what they spend in one week—and then talk about it.
• Use natural consequences. If they spend all their money on a video game and later want a concert ticket, let that be a teachable moment.

• Is your spending aligned with your goals?
• Would you make the same choice again?
• Are you buying out of habit or intention?

Money management isn’t just about how much you save—it’s also about how well you spend. Helping your kids become conscious consumers is one of the best gifts you can give them.
